Moving Beyond Implicit Bias Training: Policy Insights for Increasing Organizational Diversity

Many organizations are working to address diversity, equity, and inclusion. Organizations frequently use implicit bias explain disparities marshal training as a solution. Implicit is difficult change trainings do not yield more diversity in organizations, so should move beyond their inclusion efforts. (a) educate members of about organizational efforts inclusion; (b) prepare for, rather than accommodate, defensive responses from dominant group members; (c) implement structures that foster responsibility for goals; opportunities high-quality intergroup contact; affinity groups underrepresented people; welcoming inclusive messaging; processes bypass interpersonal bias. Although no simple, one-size-fits-all solutions leaders have many tools they can design effective strategies.
